War, love & tough decisions: ‘The Nightingale’ by Kristin Hannah

The Nightingale, by Kristin Hannah The Nightingale is a beautiful story of bravery, familial bonds, love and loss set in World War II. The story alternates between the narratives of two sisters living in Nazi occupied France.  Isabelle and Vianne are not one bit alike; one stubbornly brave but lonely and the other wholesome and kind, but meek. Their differences are exacerbated during the circumstances of war, the other not knowing the contributions the other was making. Isabelle, a young woman in the French resistance and Vianne, a married woman whose husband is a prisoner of war and who has a nazi captain billeted at her home. 12 Books in 12 Months

Last year I came across a pin on Pinterest that suggested reading 12 books in 12 months. This really appealed to me as I used to read dozens of books a year when I was a teenager, but with vast reading lists while at university I got out of the habit. Since then I have found it hard getting back into reading, my work involves huge amounts of reading (usually very dry reading) and I only read for leisure when an interesting title catches my eye or I’m gifted a book.

That’s where this modest goal of a dozen books in a year is a manageable way of getting back into reading 😊 I have compiled a list of books, a mix of fiction and non-fiction to read throughout 2021. When I’ve finished each book I will post a review over on my blog and share a few snippets in my stories as I go along.

First up is ‘Who Cares Wins’ by Lily Cole. I have been dying to get my hands on this book and was gifted it this Christmas by my husband. I am hugely passionate about living more sustainably and that is what this book is all about. I love the title and want to get it printed as a poster for my wfh office - it’s a mantra that resonates a lot for me. I hope you enjoy this journey with me and do let me know if you’ve read any of the books on my list 😁
